Facilitative Communication Skills Actively Listening Actively listening is paying undivided attention to what the client says and does. Reflecting Reflecting is repeating the client's verbal or nonverbal message for the client's benefit. Imparting information Imparting information is helping the client by supply ing additional data. Clarifying Clarifying is an attempt to understand the basic nature of a client's statement. Paraphrasing In paraphrasing , the nurse assimilates and restates what the client has said. Checking Perceptions Checking perceptions means sharing how one person perceives and hears another. Questioning Questioning is a very direct way of speaking with clients. Structuring Structuring is an attempt to create order or evolve guidelines. Pinpointing Pinpointing calls attention to certain kinds of statements and relationships. Helpful skills in communication Speak in a normal tone. Do not raise your voice or shout. Realize that speaking lauder does not increase comprehension. Speak to the client on an adult level. Remembe that impaired communication does not indicate impaired intelligence. Avoid carring on more than one conversation at a time. Ask simple auestions that require simple answers.
